|Preparing Young Hearts and Minds for Both Time and Eternity
Bethany Lutheran School has a unique mission. Not only do we do everything we can to prepare our students for the world in which they are living, but we are also careful to share with them the divine truths of God's love and salvation in Christ Jesus through which our heavenly Father freely gives us eternal life. In other words, we are preparing young hearts and minds for both time and eternity. Our mission is straightforward, yet unique. Bethany Evangelical Lutheran School strives to partner with all families to make and train disciples for Christ while providing an excellent education.
Our Academic Program
Bethany Lutheran School does not subscribe to one single curriculum, theory, publisher, or trend in education. Our curriculum incorporates a blend of many nationally recognized publishers, sound educational approaches, a variety of teaching theories, and adaptable styles of instruction. Bethany’s curriculum is balanced and comprehensive. Its design promotes cognitive growth through its objectives, activities, strategies, and resources. The well-rounded curriculum takes into account the wide range of cultural backgrounds and learning styles of the students, offering flexibility for the teacher to work with each student and their individual abilities. Bethany’s curriculum leaves graduates of Bethany fully prepared for high school and positioned to excel in higher education.
Christian Faith and Life
A devotion and Bible study begin every day and set the tone and purpose for every part of the curriculum that follows. Each Bible lesson has a key truth that is meaningfully discussed and applied to the children’s lives. This comprehensive curriculum gives students a strongly rooted foundation in God’s Word on the basis of Martin Luther's Small Catechism, equipping them to love and understand God's Word and will and to apply those sacred truths to a life of Christian love and service to others.
A thorough mathematics foundation is critical for success in our ever-changing world. The math approach at Bethany gives students a firm foundation in computation, math concepts, problem solving strategies, and data interpretation. The math program is experiential in nature and employs manipulatives and real life situations to build mathematical knowledge.
A clear understanding of the English language is imperative for success in all areas of the curriculum and everyday life. Bethany’s language arts curriculum accomplishes this through the integration of reading, phonics, writing, spelling, grammar, and oral expression in a sequential and developmentally appropriate order.
The science curriculum at Bethany leads children to a greater appreciation of the awe-inspiring world in which they live. By means of textbook investigation, hands-on experimentation, special group projects, and technology-aided presentations, students discover various aspects of physical, earth, and life science. They develop skills such as observing, comparing, hypothesizing, predicting, measuring, testing, and interpreting.
The scope of study in Bethany’s social studies curriculum includes exposure to a variety of social science disciplines: world cultures, values and customs, history, geography, sociology, current events, economics, and civics. Instruction and activities in these areas are structured to help young students develop skills such as critical thinking, decision-making, cause-and-effect relationships, reading charts, maps, and graphs.
Bethany’s music program contains the integrated components of music theory, voice development, and music appreciation. Basic elements such as notation, rhythm, and music terminology prepare the children to read music and play an instrument. Vocal skills are developed through pitch exploration, ear training, and daily classroom singing. Composers and their works are analyzed in music appreciation.
Concepts such as line, shape, form, color, pattern, design, and composition are developed in an art curriculum that allows children to express their creativity and discover their talents. Young artists learn to value not only the product, but also the process. The children also enjoy exposure to well-known artists, their unique styles, and classical works.
The goals of Bethany’s physical education program are many: instruction in rules, skills, and strategies of team and individual sports; physical fitness and cardiovascular development; practical experiences in leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship; and development of a positive self-image in a safe, structured environment.
